I just finished installing all day a Sony Xplod MEX BT2500 but when I turn it on it says "FAILURE" and for a second the speakers make them faint "surging" noise

In a Sony, this usually means either the speakers are mis-wired or a speaker wire is shorted or pinched. Disconnect all the speaker wires, then turn on the CD player and see if it still shows the failure message. If it does, you have a defective unit. If it doesn't, start hooking up the speaker wires one at a time until you identify the one that's causing the problem.

I've seen this problem several times, and in every case it's turned out to be a speaker wiring issue and NOT a defect in the CD player.

If you installed it properly then take it back..
