Depends upon how long they went out and how their relationship ended. Either way, you should not do it without discussing with your best friend first. If they do not like the idea or seem even remotely hesitant, then you may be forced to choose. However, you should remember that this person is your best friend for a reason and if they have been your best friend for some time and you get along really well, you need to know why they did not get along with the ex. Learn from your best friend's mistake, if it was one, do not repeat it.

Well, I guess that depends on how much you value your friendship with your best friend. You need to weigh out your options. Are your feelings strong enough for this guy that you're willing to lose your best friend over? If you think your feelings are strong enough and you could really have a great relationship out of this, the next thing you need to do is talk to your friend about it and get her insight. Although she might not always give her blessing, if you feel it's worth it, my best advice is to go for it. It's always best to do what you feel is right, if you don't follow your heart you'll always wonder what could have been. At least if you end up dating him and it doesn't work, you won't be bothered by the "what could have been." I hope this helps!

Only if she's perfectly okay with it. Talk to her, tell her you have feelings for her ex and its mutual, and find out what she thinks. Also, find out why they broke up. If it was because they were incompatible, then thats fine but if its because he did something wrong, then you might want to be careful. You're entering dangerous territory, so proceed with caution. Even if she's okay with it, I wouldn't suggest sharing all the dirty details of your relationship. Best of luck to you!

If you ask her and she says it's ok, then I would go for it. But I hope you really like this guy if you're willing to do this.
If she says yes, stear clear of her ex or your friendship will be at risk. Of course, you can always ask her again months later or so.
To me it all depends on how much you value her friendship and what she tells you.

Only if you don't want to be best friends with that person any more.

I've seen this happen several times now to various friends and acquaintances, and every time the friendship ended.

no! it really depends on how long they've been apart, but i still say no. especially not if its ur best friend. some girl did that to my best friend and my best friend totally freaked. so imagine if i wouldve done it, it wouldve been worst cuz i'm her best friend. so i say no, there's many more guys out there. and even if you ask and she says its ok, she'll still be bothered by it! it happens all the time! =]
