Italian, maybe Swiss Italian - something like that. The -elli is a dead give away. My fiance's Italian ancestors from Switzerland were the Vassallis and the Pellegrinis.

My guess is that when you get far enough back in your research you'll find that ancestor in Italy or an Italian city-state.
