The fact that it's sticky might cause bits of the gum to stick to under your braces and you might not even notice, and that to some extent will promote cavities even if it is sugarless. Sugar doesn't affect braces directly, but eating sugary stuff with braces on increases your chance of getting cavities when the food gets stuck between or under your braces, and when you fail to brush it off.

More so than the sugar leading to cavities in the spaces behind the braces, the gum can get caught in the braces leading to the braces getting bend, jammed or gunked up with the gum. Best not to chew.

I've had braces on for over a year now...I chew gum...but I don't really chew it...
If you're going at it like cows with cud, then I'd avoid it.
But I usually keep it off to the side. It's more for refreshment since I have to talk to lots of people regularly at work.

But I've never really had a problem. I've only gotten it stuck on the back hook (for rubber bands) a couple of times but it comes off really easily.

The ortho doc will ALWAYS tell you to stay away from it, though.
Most people can't be careful enough--- so it's "across the board" kinda stuff.

I have braces. If you chew gum, chew sugarless because the non-sugarless gum is stickier and gets stuck to the braces. Sugarless gum doesn't get stuck as easily.

I had braces for 5 years.
Chewed all kinds of gum at least a million times.

Never had a problem.

im an orthodontic assistant. it is no gum at all while you are in braces. i think where people get confused is that you can have sugarless gum as far as your general dentist goes. this is because they are trying to help you prevent cavitities. with braces we are trying to prevent the breakage of the appliances

Yes you can chew gum. I've never heard that sugar is bad for braces, but it is of course bad for your teeth.

Chew gum if you want. I'd recommend sugarfree regardless of braces or not.

Sugar has nothing to do with it. Chew gum moves youe teeth and you have to wear the braces longer.
