They usually cost between $75 and $100. There are several reasons for charging so much. First, the animals have all had their shots and some have been neutered. Secondly, pets are expensive and charging this much helps people realize it and helps the shelter staff know you are prepared to PAY to care for the animal. Also, it keeps horrible places like experimental labs from taking these pets.
However, there are usually some days when adoption is discounted. Or if a really nice animal has been in the shelter a long time they might let him go for less.
Have fun with your new pet!

I am getting a dog in a couple of weeks from a shelter. We have been going around to different shelters and the dogs cost around $250. This is usually because it has been spayed/neutered, it has had its shots, and sometimes it has even been micro-chipped. Some of the high quality shelter's dogs cost more, but the usual range in price is about $200 to $450.

Every state has a different way sweety. Someone said 'free.' Not in my state! The cost depends on size of animal, if it already has been nuetured, if not you help pay but once you take it in to get fixed, the vet will sign papers from the shelter saying so and the shelter will refund you your money back. Its just there way of making sure the animal gets fixed. Taking someones word just isn't enuf these days! But all, in all, after a short time you take it home, you'll forget all about how you got it home and focus on spoiling him/her. Good luck.

It will depend on your area, but typically there is no charge for the dog exactly, but there usually is an adoption fee which covers a number of services including veterinary. Additionally, all shelters have policies and procedures to which you must agree/adhere.
Here is an excerpt from one of my local shelters:
" The adoption fees are $ 100.00 for cats, $125.00 for kittens & $175.00 for dogs, which includes a certificate to spay or neuter the animal when it is age appropriate at an affiliated animal hospital and a microchip which would identify the animal if it is ever lost. Where the animal is of appropriate age, he/she will be spayed or neutered before or shortly after being placed. The fee also includes the following:
Veterinary check-up & fecal check
Feline Leukemia & FIV test (FeLv/FIV combination for cats)
1st Distemper shot for dogs, FVRCP for cats
Treatment for fleas, ear mites & de-worming if needed
Heart worm check and treatment if needed for dogs
Spay/Neuter certificate , if unaltered and a microchip ID
Guarantee - we require any cat/kitten dog/puppy that you are unable to care for, be returned to our shelter. "
Fees and procedures do vary some, but I don't know of any shelter that has no fee at all, as most of them are not for profit and are funded by donations and grants. The fees help cover those veterinary costs, as well as food, housing, etc. for the animals. Without a fee they couldn't operate.
Hope that is of some help.

usually there is an adoption fee for most likey up to $125. that if for the spay/neuter cost for the dog and for the initial care that they had to take for the dog, and part of it might be because the shelter needs upkeep money.

My rescue asks $125, and the humane society here asks $100, usually. Fee is less, if it's a senior dog.

sometimes they're free, other times they are not.
when we got our pyrenese "Ted" from the shelter he was $95. but that is because he was an unaltered (he had his nuts) male dog. it was $35 for the dog and then they required that we let them neuter him themselves for $60 more before we could take him home.
either way, it is totally worth it.
but make sure you know what you are getting before you adopt. adopt.
