if you have a phone with a screen, you can see their number if it isn't private. some phone companies i know of (where i live) have a system of you being able to call whoever last rang you or calls you have missed. im not sure what to do if they are calling from a public telephone. :(

Yes the answer from Mike G. is right on the money. I had a friend who was being annoyed to death by an annoying phone caller and the phone company said they would do the exact same steps that my friend and his family would have to contact the police dept and then they the police would press charges and the whole legal mess.

He stopped it another way by getting a caller id device (box) and then he screened his calls. Also he had the phone company put a block on his phone which is called "anonymous call rejection" which means that the caller must have his id (name and phone number capable of being displayed on your caller id box). If he does not allow that then the call will not go through that means your phone will not even ring when anyone tries to call your number. This will help because then if he allows it to go through then you will know who is annoying you with those calls and you can tell him that you know who it is.

That is how my friend and his wife stopped getting their annoying phone calls.

This may be another way to solve your problem without getting the police involved in your quest for telephone peace.

I read the answers from the other people who answered your question and I remembered how my friend was able to solve his problem which was the same as yours. I hope you are able to solve the problem and have some peace.

LOL, I've seen it a ton of times on tv shows and movies, where you track a call piece by piece and it takes X seconds... that's all bogus.

two things to note, LD or Local. they are handled differently. I'll start with a Local prank call. Because the call is Local, there is no billing cost, and it may be possible that there is no trackable record of the call. ( since the phone company isn't going to charge anyone for this free call, they don't keep detailed records of it -why bother, right?) So there's your freebee prank call. After the first one, you call your phone company and request the proceedure for prank calls, most likely they will have you involve the police, this is twofold, it makes sure that your serious about the complaint, and it gives them protection from liability, as they will only release the caller to the police. Your local phone company will then track all calls to your phone line. (you just had to tell them to activate this feature) What you need to do then is get a notebook and log time of day for the call or calls, and length of the call. (time of day is most important, as well, you should note in your log any call that wasn't a prank with times, so they can be separated)

For Long Distance prank calls, there is a call record generated for billing, so you can file a complaint and the first call can find the prankster. Again call the phone company and your local police department. Also make a logbook of the date and times of each prank call if they continue. The phone company goes back and pulls the call detail record for your telephone number and tracks the call back through the PTSN to the originating party, and releases that to your Police dept.

You should know that the police will press charges regardless of who is making the prank calls once they find them, so just prepare yourself. Occasionaly pranksters are family members or friends with a poor idea of fun. (insert your own version of "you made your bed, now sleep in it" here.) Also, don't bother to think that you can find out who it is and get your own revenge, the phone company won't release information directly to you, only to police departments, and ussually only with a court subpoena. (the closest your going to get with that is getting caller ID, but if your prankster is that stupid -(insert your own version of "they probably run with scissors often").

Yeah a long time ago My friend and I thought it would be funny to do a few prank calls so we used star 67 to make our number appear private and we went over board with prank calling thinking we couldn't be caught because we used Star-67 to make our number private we apparently someone called the cops on us and they showed up at my house in 10 minutes so yeah they can track regardless of private or not
