The National Lottery exists, however, there is no way that they will ever contact you telling you that you have won anything. The only way you win the lottery is by going into an outlet, buying a ticket, checking the numbers when the draw takes place and, if you win, claiming the prize. If you do not claim the prize they will not contact you and you lose the money after six months.
It is run by Camelot and, as I have said, the only contact that they will have with an individual is if that individual contacts them first, they do not send out letters telling anyone that they have won --even if they really have won, it is the individuals responsibility to contact them.

Yes, it is so true; this is one of the oldest scams on the internet. If you have not physically purchased a ticket, then the chances are very high that it is a scam. Most of these lottery scams, whether it be United Kingdom or South African (yes, I just got an email winning notification from a South African Lottery LOL) and it is simply information gathering, that they sell later on. So, steer clear!

I have from time to time wondered about the mathematics of the lottery.
1. Each machine must have a bias
2. The balls must have differing weights even if they are very slight
3. This is why they continually change/replace or add new machines and the names to stop statistical analysis. So is it a fair system or could people in the know ( i.e the lottery ) glean and continually get real statistics the general public could never achieve. ? ( make your own mind up ) then choose !no publicity!.

OK here is the inside scoop (and trust me, I should know!)

The National Lottery as run by Camelot and at www.national-lottery.co.uk is legitimate. Anything else you should be suspicious of.

IF you have won and play online through their website, you will be notified you have won. You may or may not be contacted by a representative depending on the size of your win. If you play the Lotto regularly you should always play online to ensure your ticket is never lost.

Camelot have NO say in where the money goes to for good causes, and people should stop bagging them about this. Where the money goes is determined by another organisation that was set up by the Government. Blame the Goverment if you dont like where the money goes to, Camelot has no say in this in order to keep it independent.

As someone who knows the ins and outs of the Lottery I can 100% assure you there is no way for anyone to tamper with the balls. Ignore the rumours, I know the checks and balances the National Lottery does before each draw and trust me, it is way OVERKILL just to provide transparency for the public.

The only real lottery in the UK is the one that is presented weekly on Saturday TV. It is probably the most open and honest lottery in the world. The dishonesty comes when the quango that decides how to give away the profits to deserving causes, channels it into daft and unpopular subjects.
The lottery is also drawn on a Wednesday.

It is not a scam if you physically went out and purchased the ticket but if as has been said you did not but have been told you have won it is a scam.

Tonights numbers were 4 - 33 - 34 - 38 - 39 - 49 - 23 with a jackpot of £5.47M

LOL i used to think the national lottery was a scam. Ive barely won a thing since ive played and it started November 1994!

I dread to think how much ive spent :( but more recently over 12 months I have tried and tested three online syndicate groups.

Currently, ive stuck with you play weplay and in the time ive been there ive clocked up:

£328.60 total winnings-to-date, and
£258.06 commission-to-date from recommending 26 friends!

This is a far greater return for my money than if I played by myself and hey one day it might be a big one!

ive found I can now play for free in the lotto and euromillions draws and am beginning to earn in excess of what i spend!

Hope ive more than answered your question...

Theres more information on lottery syndicates here:

Miss dilema
That is quite an interesting point that i have not noticed, recently it was announced that lottery money was partly going to be used to fund the London Olympics and i wonder if a lot of people are boycotting it from places outside of London
