Our church mission team is going to Cambodia. We are trying to find a recipe for making soap that uses only ingredients readily available there. Can anyone help?

recipe for Lye Soap lye is (Sodium Hydroxide)

Dissolve a can of lye in 2 1/2 pints of cold water.

Pour lye/cold water mixture into an iron kettle with 6 pounds of clean grease (consistency of honey) into an iron kettle placed over a medium hot fire in the yard.

Stir with a long handle wooden paddle until well mixed and beginning to thicken.

Remove kettle from fire; and pour into molds or shallow containers.

Let mixture set overnight.

Cut into squares.

Soap is very white and has a clean smell. Great for laundry, bathing and shampoo.

by mixing Lye and fatty oils, you can make some very nice soaps.

Please just don't dump lye and fat together. You need precise measurements or your could end up with lye heavy soap--which will BURN your skin. I don't know what kinds of fat are available in cambodia, but here is a link to a soap calculator and you can choose to have basic soap making instructions as well. Find the type of fats available to you--hoping you can find coconut or palm kernel. Lard and tallow make excellent soap--if those are prevailant--use those. Email me with any Q's. Be careful--lye is dangerous to work with.

Phnom Penh and Battambang are large, cosmopolitan cities. I assume you'll be flying into one of them. Anyway, anything you could possibly need to make soap would be available there. You would even be able to purchase soap, which might be a better route. It's not expensive, and the cost of obtaining the ingredients to make it, and then the effort required, doesn't seem to be such a big saving, nor worth it in the long run.

Goat milk and lye, heat and mix vigorously. A friend made goat milk soap from her goats in her yard. It was a muscle strain but a rather simple recipe. I am guessing that you can get lye anywhere, including Cambodia.

Here is a site you can download for four dollars, how to make natural soap in different places all over the world. Cambodia is included in it. I hope this helps. I will keep looking for more sites.

I have made lye soap like "smiley" suggested. I love it and use it often even though my wife buys store bought soap.
