If you're thinking of car audio systems, what you're seeing is probably a capacitor. Many after-market audio systems use "stiffening" capacitors to ensure a stable power supply to the amplifiers during musical peaks. There is a lot of debate about whether they really make an audible difference, but they're still very popular among people with high-powered sound systems in automobiles.

Most car audio power capacitors fall in the 1 farad range or more, and typically look like a very large cylinder-type battery.
