If you are then we all are. Hey, just go and know it will be hard the first couple of times. Sit in the back. Nobody really is going to pay that much attention. That is just pride on your side telling you you are so important everyone is going to be looking at you. Just go for crying out loud and it will get so much easier then you will be so glad. It has to be where it doesn't matter how foolish or weird you feel because Jesus is worth it and you need him or you will die and go to hell. Forsake ALL others for him. Including yourself.

If you are a Christian and believe in Jesus, you do not have to go to church to get into heaven- but going to church does help you in your everyday life (depending on what church it is) and helps you to continue to be a Christian. I am also very self conscious- if I go to church I usually sit at the back and don't stand up or sing in the worship. Part of this is self consciousness, part of this is because what is the point of singing the songs when I don't relate to the words? People sing about God- I cant sing about him when I don't know him. I believe one day I will know who he is and then I will be able to worship him. And there is no reason why you have to stand up to worship god, you can do that fine sitting down.
Trust God. He will guide you down the right path. And be patient, perhaps one day you will be able to go to church and praise God with all of your heart and not have to worry about what other people think of you. It probably won't happen overnight, but if you pray about it, it will happen eventually.
I go to a great church. I don't go all the time though. At my church people are healed and miracles happen. This is why I go. The people there are happy and I am not. I need healing for all the pains in my life and for my depression. And amazing stuff is happening at this church so I may as well give it a try, I feel it is the only way I am ever going to get rid of this depression. I have tried all other avenues including anti-depressants and psychiatrists who only made my depression worse. I want what the people in my church have, and the only way I will get it is through persistence. It is hard going to church but that's where the miracles are happening so that is where I want to be.
Not all churches are like this though. Another thing you can do is have a look at all the churches in you area- there may be one that you like enough to go to.
Before you go to church you can always spend some time with him at home. You could put on some worship music and pray, and even read the Bible. Any of the first four chapters in the New Testament are the best in my opinion. Ask God to help you understand what it is saying in the Bible and how it relates to your life.
You are not a bad person. Christian or not, God loves you and wants you to be happy.

if you are a saved born again child of God , then you are already part of the church . it is the truly saved that are the church ,not the building . the building is just where the children of God go to fellowship together and worship God. now about you not going , The church (the people ) work together to do Gods will in one accord , just as your fingers work together on your hand to do something. if you loose a finger or two, the hand does not work as well as if it had all it's fingers . it's the same with the church . we all have a job to do in the church , what ever that may be . but if we are not joined together with the rest of the church , are job , which God Himself chooses for us and us alone, the one that was picked just for us before the World was made , is not being done . now the other members may be covering for you by trying to do the job, but no one can do it the same way that you could. that's why God chose you...... Go and join the rest of the Church, God is waiting ....... Remember God Loves you Just the way you are . you have nothing to be self concious about ............. Hope This Helps

No, I don't think that you are a bad person just because you don't go to church. Why are you so self conscious about yourself? The thing is that we are all sinners but we are also all equal in God's eyes. God's loves us all the same from the preacher, choir director to the person that cleans the church. The reason that you should go to church is the worship and the fellowship with God. We are in God's house not the peoples house. God has given us so much that a few hours one day a week should be nothing. God Bless you and don't be so hard on yourself.

No you aren't a bad person. You can still have a relationship with God without going to church. But to me there is nothing like a good church service and that is why I go. Also, when you attend church, you have a church family and i think that is a very important key to living a good christian life. If you still don't want to go you could read your bible and watch a service on TV.
God Bless You.

Dear Meteor,
First let me say that going to church does not make someone a good person. No one is good on their own (except for Jesus), and so people receive His goodness by placing their faith in Him. However, i think those who go to church for the right reasons can tell you that going to church is a good thing and not going to church can be a bad thing.
i think the fact that you feel bad for not going is kind of like you telling yourself that you should go. i will tell you that you should go- so that you can meet God and have a deep and personal relationship with God.
i don't think that people are out to judge you and perhaps if you feel this way- i know of many churches that are very friendly especially for new seekers. i went to Bible College at a Calvary Chapel and i find many of their mid-week services to be wonderful (i am a pastor at a small baptist church, but i attend midweek Bible studies at Calvary Chapel sometimes)... i think it's just getting started and you will find that people who truly love Jesus, will meet and love people where they are in their faith.
Perhaps if going to church is too much at first- you can start by attending a Bible study- where it's a smaller group of people and you will have people you know already when you go to church.
Hope that helps. Feel free to email me if you wanted to share more specifically and i'll listen, pray, and offer advice.
Kindly,
Nickster

Not a bad person but that doesn't mean you shouldn't go. Staying at home on Shabbat can be refreshing but thats not the purpose of going nor is it ideal. Reading your bible at home or singing song at home or praying at home is not what we are instructed to do in the New Testiment
Hebrews 10:24-25 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
Shalom Alechem

No, you're not. I used to go every week until my husband left me. Then all I did was cry so I stopped going. I never went back. I don't know why you might be self-conscious, but if that's all that's holding you back, go to a church in another town where you probably won't know anyone. Good luck and God bless.

I go to church to worship God and fellowship with other Christians and learn from Gods word.
but if you read your bible and pray you can still have a relationship with God.
some people go to church but it dose not affect them in there life, better to live the word then be a "church goer"

no you are not a bad person but obviously the desire is there for a reason ....... it is His prompting
church is not a place to be dreaded or assumed that everyone is not welcome -
is simply a place where likeminded believers gather to worship and learn how to live closer to the Lord
some say they will not attend for is full of hypocrites but seem to forget that hypocrites go to ball games, concerts, grocery stores, golf courses etc......without ever realizing that perhaps those "hypocrites" may realize the state of their own spiritual condition and may be attending to better themselves
if attending for any other reason, like with any other wrong/sin in their lives will give account for - as we all will
perhaps if you feel uncomfortable in being in a large group of "perhaps unknown" people - find a smaller congregation and start from there - the main thing is to find a group to worship with that teach from the Word and where you feel most comfortable and are most likely to grow
may you find the peace you seem to be searching for
