I'm taking "short dose" of prednisone to easy bad flair up of osteoarthritis. 4 10mg pills, for the first 4 days, 2 10mg pills for the next 4 days, 1 10mg pill for last 4 days. I've been taking it for 8 days now. My ankle is puffy, swollen and very painful, I can barely walk. I know that prednisone can cause swelling but this seems severe. I will call the doc, first thing Mon. morning but I was just curious to know if anyone else has had strange side effects from this steroid.

I'm pretty sure it's not the arthritis causing this, it's a dfferant type of swelling??

Major Side Effects

depression, mania, or other psychiatric symptoms
unusual fatigue or weakness
blurred vision
abdominal pain
peptic ulcer
infections
painful hips or shoulders
osteoporosis
acne breakouts
insomnia
reduced libido

Minor Side Effects

weight gain
Stretch marks
facial swelling
nervousness
acne
rash
increased appetite
hyperactivity

These are the main side effects of using prednisone. I think you really need to have that ankle of yours checked. Prednisone is supposed to be an anti-inflammatory drug so getting a swollen ankle despite the medication may mean there really is something wrong.

Side Effects that may occur when this drug is used for a prolonged period of time. Check with your doctor if any of the following side effects occur:

abdominal or stomach pain or burning (continuing)
acne
bloody or black, tarry stools
changes in vision
eye pain
filling or rounding out of the face
headache
irregular heartbeat
menstrual problems
muscle cramps or pain
muscle weakness
nausea
pain in arms, back, hips, legs, ribs, or shoulders
reddish purple lines on arms, face, groin, legs, or trunk
redness of eyes
sensitivity of eyes to light
stunting of growth (in children)
swelling of feet or lower legs
tearing of eyes
thin, shiny skin
trouble in sleeping
unusual bruising
unusual increase in hair growth
unusual tiredness or weakness
vomiting
weight gain (rapid)
wounds that will not heal

So yes the medicine could be causing the increased swelling. You need to talk to your doctor right away. This is not good.

Why not go to the ER? They can tell you immediately whether it be a reaction or whenther you have sprained your ankle. That is what it sounds like to me. A sprain is much more painful, at first, than a break. If you insist on waiting til Monday, Ice it down and prop it up. Stay off your feet. Hope you feel better.

It is very possible that this is from the medication, but it is best to check with the doc on Monday anyway.
