Wow, weird question...
We count some pills by hand, some by scale, and some by a robot...
On the scale, we scan the bottle's label and the scale knows the weight of each pill
The robot has calibrated cells that we fill with each type of medication and it counts the pills into bottles using vaccum and pressure
Hope this helps...
Oh and ...we do touch them sometimes...sorry

First, most of the time, it's the pharm tech who does the actual counting.
There are special counting machines. Also, you can use a specially programed scale. You scan the UPC on the bottle, and it knows how much each tablet weighs, and it will tell you how many tablets you have.

larger pharmacies (mail order, institutional, and big retail outfits) have machines to do the counting. Most of us still count by hand.
There are different machines out there. Some utilize lasers to count. Others do it by weight.

In my clinic we do it all by hand. Well we don't touch them, we have a little thing that looks like a butter knife and a special tray we use.
