If a professor is invited to speak at a university (he was invited from overseas) is it appropriate for him to purchase and wear a school tie of the host university during his speech? Just wondering.

as long as he is dressed in bussiness attire, i see no problem

If he wishes to do so, it is a charming gesture of solidarity. (Please note however, it would be rude to expect him to do so.)
