My Mormon neice (my husband's sister is a convert) is getting baptized in a few weeks and I have no idea what to get her. We're not LDS nor are any of my family or inlaws. I wanted to get her a cross, (which is what I bought my goddaughter) but I read that Mormon's don't wear them. I want to get her something with religious meaning, but what is acceptable? All of you who are LDS what do you get your baptized kids? I know her father is buying a book of scripture for her so that's out of the question, but I'm open to all suggestions!

oh, and no anti-Mormon comments please, if you don't agree with their religion that's fine, but I just need my question answered....

I don't think it's really expected to give gifts for LDS baptisms, although I'm sure it'd be appreciated. I didn't give either of my brothers anything, except to show up. (Which was a big deal for me, since I had long since left the church.)
*You could get her a nice bookmark for her new scriptures (like those ribbon ones.)
*A set of colored pencils made for marking in scriptures
*Jewelry other than the cross (you are right about them not wearing them.) If she doesn't yet have a CTR ring, now would be a good time to give her one.
*Also, you can search the web for books written by Mormons. I have a huge collection by people like Kimball and Hinkley (prophets in the church.) A really good one, since she's getting baptized is called The Miracle of Forgiveness by Kimball.
*Like the V-8 commercial -- smacks head!
Don't get her the book I suggested....it's for adults. Look for the ones geared toward children and young teens. Silly me.
I thought of one more that would be really nice with her new scriptures. They sell scripture cases (like cloth or leather ones) to carry both the Bible and BoM around in.

The local Deseret Bookstore can have your niece's name and I think even the baptism dated embossed on the cover of the 'Quad' set of scriptures. You don't need to be a member to have this done, and the clerks will be more than happy to help.
That might be an appropriate gift for the occasion.

I'm LDS, and a tradtion in our family is to get a porceiln or cermaic christus stutue, it doesnt have to be anything fancy, and it applies to all religons, when my cousins were baptized into the catholic church we got them one, so its non offencive, and just a very nice keep sake to have.
A CTR ring is a nice present also, its a ring with the letters CTR standing for choose the right.
If you go to any seagull book, or deseret book, they all have great presents,
www.deseretbook.com if you want to order online.
Best of luck

You could give her a scripture bag to go with her new scriptures or depending on her age the New Era (12-18) or Friend (12 & under) magazine subscription that is quite cheap for a year subscription all of which are found on the church's website. www.lds.org under the heading prepare a lesson then by clicking on magazines.

Ask your sister in law, she might have some ideas. You could get her a CTR ring, or necklace. I have put some sites on the bottom, the last one is really good! Get her a CTR necklace with her birthstone!
