I have an English Staffordshire terrier, who seems to like to dig holes near one of my trees. There is nothing buried there but she always digs in the same spot,

IT it because she/he is bored. She digs in the same spot because that is where she started digging so wants to continue this hole, not start a fresh. To stop it spray vinegar and water into the hole. it worked with my two dogs!

She could be digging for a number of reasons. A small animal could have passed there and she's intent on finding out what, or she's bored, or she just wants a cool place to lay. Yes, I did say bored. Some dogs if not walked every day for at least 30 minutes will begin to show some sort of behavior that may not be acceptable, chewing things they shouldn't, digging etc. This is a way for them to expel excess energy and frustration. Also, when walking your dog remember to take different routes when you can so it's not the same way each time.

There are a number of reasons that dogs dig. One is a well-founded urge for comfort, particularly on hot days. Some dogs dig because they are pursuing an odor of buried food or a prey animal. Sometimes, dogs dig just for the fun of it while others dig out of boredom or frustration.

It's good that your dog is only digging in one particular spot. At least your backyard isn't turning into a mine field of holes. :)

A dog usually digs a hole to 1. bury a bone or meat , 2. to dig for the other bones already buried there, or 3. to find a cooler place to lie in.

you picked a breed that was created to dig out prey as a hunting dog. she is hard wired to dig.
you can by agents that repel dogs so they won't dig in a certain spot. I would find a spot I would like her to dig in and bury treats for her to find in that spot only.

She really needs to dig to be happy so find a way for both of you to be happy about her great ability!!

I bet you have a mole or two in that area. My foxhound will dig a crater to get at those little things. The mastiff is starting to do it too.

Mine does because the ground is cooler under the surface, and she digs down to lay in it and cool off.
