Just like any "fraternity" - it's a brotherhood, with initiatory rituals, which are generally secret. There are secret handshakes and modes of recognition.

In the case of Freemasonry, they like to say that they are: "A system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated with symbols."

Other than that, it's just like any bar downtown.

I'd tell you, but then I'd have to kill you. Sorry I couldn't resist.
I know that Skull and Bones is a secret society at Yale. It has a bit of a shady reputation, Bush Sr. belonged so G.W. probably did too.
Some of these "secret" societies have "occult" (which really just means hidden) practices, others are more like really hard to get into fraternities. A way for the rich and famous to keep all that lovely money to themselves by networking with each other, rubbing elbows with each other, etc. The Templars were an order of Catholic Knights, who escorted
"nobles" to the holy land and back, ensuring their safety. But evidently the Church decided they had become too powerful and most were executed as heretics.
I hope that helps some.

Those are great examples. But it would include any group religious or not that operate or initiates members is a secret ceremony.. Since God has put a special burden of concern on my heart for the Mormons. I would hold up their inner core people as members of a secret society.. Jim
