I don't think so. The cardinals prayed to the Holy spirit for guidence and followed all the rules.

A Papal Conclave works like this:

+ A pope dies and is buried

+ The cardinals come to Rome for the conclave that will elect the new pope. The word conclave (Latin, *** + clavis, literally, "locked with the key") designates:
. • The place in a locked section of the Vatican where the cardinals elect a new pope.
. • The actual gathering of the cardinals.

+ The conclave begins 15 to 20 days after the pope's death.

+ The cardinals pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit during a Mass

+ The cardinals, sealed in the Sistine Chapel, vote every morning and afternoon.

+ A two-thirds majority plus one is required for election for the first 30 ballots. After that, a simple majority is required.

+ After each vote, they burn the ballots and add special chemicals to make the smoke white or black.
. • Black smoke means no new pope yet.
. • White smoke announces the election of a new pope.

+ The cardinals may elect any baptized male they wish. There have been occasions in the past where they have elected a layman. After their election, the layman has to be ordained priest and bishop.

+ They ask the one elected if he accepts. The moment he accepts, he is pope.

+ The pope chooses his “Papal” name.

+ Then the new pope is announced to the world.

With love in Christ.

it really is distinctly unlikely that any U.S. individual should be elected pope, see you later because the U.S. is a international potential. yet even if that wasn't real, I doubt Mahoney has the muster that ought to earn him adequate votes. If for some reason Cardinal Mahoney became elected pope, he would not be immediately infallible in each and every thing he did and suggested. like another popes, the in hassle-free words time a press release of his should be considered infallible should be even as he spoke "ex cathedra." it really is an exceedingly good rarity - there hasn't been an "ex cathedra" statement in numerous many years. ought to Mahoney be a good representative of Jesus? once elected pope, he should be extremely endowed by the Holy Spirit to finish that, yet he remains only a guy, and none persons can tell the destiny, so who's conscious.

I'm not sure, but it would have been really nifty if they had elected Cardinal Sin to be Pope, wouldn't it ?

Remember him ? Cardinal Jaime Sin, Prelate of the Phillipines, unfortunately died recently, robbing us of the great pleasure of having a Cardinal Sin, sitting on St. Peter's throne !

Yes. The Church should never elect a pope more than 40 years old & there should be a term limit of not more than 10 years. We need some forward thinking people in power, not dinosaurs!

He wasn't elected, he had already booked the gig by putting his beach towel on the throne before sunrise.
