4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
Son is translated from the Hebrew word ben or bana, from 'banah', a son (as a builder of the family name), in the widest sense (of literal and figurative relationship, including grandson, subject, nation, quality or condition, etc.,
Since the meaning of "son" in this context is so wide this could mean anything from any person to a specific group of people chosen by God as his people.
Remember Cain married a woman from the land of Nod. In Jewish legends there were animals that walked upright like people. It could be that the "sons" of God were descendent's of Adam and "daughters of men" were those from the same group Cain took his wife.
That would make Cain's descendent's hero's of old.
Not sure I agree with that, but, it is a plausible explanation. I will ask God next time I see him.

The term used "Sons of God", in the Hebrew was used for angels. There are theories that these were the "Fallen Angels" that followed Lucifer. It says back up in verse 3 that these Sons of God took the daughters of man. It seems from this that the ladies had no choice. These hybrids between the fallen angels and humans produced hybrids called Nephelim. The word Nephelim was translated into the Latin Vulgate Gigante, which was translated into the English as giants.
Whether these Nephelim were actually giants or not, I believe Goliath was one, and he was 12 feet tall. We know these Nephelim were extremely evil, and they tried to corrupt the human gene line, from which Jesus would come.
Verse 9 says that Noah was "perfect in his generations", meaning his gene pool wasn't corrupted. By the end of the chapter, God tells Noah to build the Ark because He was going to destroy all life.
I believe, and this is just conjecture, that God destroyed all life other than Noah's family in order to wipe out the corrupted human gene pool, and keep it pure for when Christ would come.

This scripture refers to the wickedness of the world. And the breakdown of the God-ordained order separating heaven and earth (Genesis 1:6-10) and specifying reproduction “each according to its kind
the word "Nephilim" comes from a word which means" to fall." In Genesis 6:4 the term designates ancient heroes who, according to most interpreters, are the products of sexual union of heavenly beings and human women. It is useless to speculate on the nature of this union. Whether it was brought about by something like demon possession, or whether angels have power permanently to assume the form of men is not revealed. But we should understand the occult is filled with sexual associations with the demonic, and there are those today who actively pursue this.
Giants--(GOLIATH )The term in Hebrew implies not so much the idea of great stature as of reckless ferocity, impious and daring characters, who spread devastation and carnage far and wide.Giants, who were huge men , and of great strength, inventors of weapons and war, were cannibals, and exceedingly debauched.

“There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bear children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.”
Niphilim as a word is debated even today, some think it could be watcher. There was a myth that there are angels that do nothing but watch the people of the world. Which I guess is where God's All knowing comes into being.
Pretty much this thing is open to interp... hehe
However, Goliath has been rumored to be one of these, however the word giant in Greek can also mean great. And it doesn’t always mean size.
This is one of those mysteries. Not much in the protestant bible is said else about these people. Perhaps the Book of Jubilees may have some reference I am not a huge reader of that book.

Here's the same verse in the Living Bible. By all means I think the KJV is best, but sometimes it helps to read it in regular English.
4 In those days, and even afterward, giants (Angels) lived on the earth, for whenever the sons of God had intercourse with human women, they gave birth to children who became the heroes mentioned in legends of old.
These “giants” were people probably nine or ten feet tall. This same Hebrew term was used to name a tall race of people in Numbers 13:33. Goliath, who was nine feet tall, appears in 1 Samuel 17. The giants used their physical advantage to oppress the people around them.

In another place it mentions a race of people known as the Anakim which Goliath is rumoured to be a descendant of.
Other than that I know we have evidence of giant reptiles in the fossil record...dinosaurs. The sons of God marrying the daughters of men I take to mean that there were men who were believers taking wives from unbelieving families. I've heard others claim that this a reference to fallen angels taking on human form and called the Nephilim but the angels were actually genderless and spirit so I can't see that happening.

Goliath was said to have been one of these 'giants'. Many people seem to believe that 'sons of God' here means that angels bred with daughters of men to create these 'giants'.
The 'sons of God' most likely refer to men who were the descendants of the godly line of Seth ( see Deut. 14:1; 32:5; Ps. 73:15; Hos. 1:10 ); they began to intermarry with the 'daughters of men', i.e., women from the ungodly family line of Cain ( see 4:16 ). The theory that the 'sons of God' were angels is less likely in view of Jesus' words that angels do not marry ( Matt. 22:30; Mark 12:25 ). This union of the godly with the unrighteous led to 'wickedness' i.e., the godly became preoccupied with evil. As a result, the earth became corrupt and filled with violence. This is the number one reason that there is to be a separation from the world for the believers in Christ, as called for in 2 Corin. 6:17.
