The apostles, though chosen and faithful, were like everyone else imperfect. Influenced by their enviroment and culture at the time, the issue of who was the greatest seemed to come up frequently. Jesus patiently had to counsel them on this.
See Mark 9:33,34;Matt 18:1-3;Luke 9:46-48;22:24-27;John 13:5-17.

The references to Peter being 'the Rock' in the Gospels were likely a late addition, after Paul had died, to reassert the Jewish Christian Church over the Pauline Doctrine.
Most of the Gospels have subtle differences which make the political infighting of the various sects clear.
The letters also betray the same sort of thing, and the hundred or so other Gospels which were left out of the New Testament are more of the same.

I think at first there was petty arguing. There was the one time they were arguing about who was the best, probably so they could figure out what positions they would have in the new govt that they thought Jesus was going to establish.
Like everyone else, they thought the Messiah was going to rule over them as a physical king and free them from Roman occupation.

Yes.
It seems that John was jealous of Peter.
