I have always been deathly allergic to cats. My chest tightens and I cannot breathe. My boyfriend has 3 cats and loves one in particular. This cat is like his best friend. He sleeps with it, eats with it, and studies with it on his lap. When we have conversations, he interrupts me to "acknowledge" its presence in the room. He refuses to keep the cat out of the bedroom even though I have to take breathing meds every night and sneeze and cough uncontrollably. Not only do I feel second fiddle to this cat, but I also feel like he just does not care enough about me to compromise. I understand that he sees cats as people, but he is supposed to love me. Moreover, he does not like to come over to my place as much because he loves his house. What do I do?

Some people are very attached to their pets, which is understandable. Animals are cherished family members too. Now,if it were your own house,I'd say you have every right to keep the cats out. However,it's not. Your boyfriend loves his cats,so he sees it as unfair that they have to be treated differently just because he's now dating you. It doesn't mean he doesn't care about you too. Maybe you should find something else to do with your boyfriend if his house is such an issue with allergies? Go to the park or mall and hang out.

Well it does seem that your bf cares more for the cat than you. But it could be that your bf just doesnt realize how bad ur allergy is. I mean knowing something and to realize it are two different things.
I had kinda the same situation. But its my bf who has the allergy. When i saw my bf having a hard time breathing. I was shocked and i told him NEVER to go near my cat anymore. (he likes animals) But thats just me. Guys are not so thoughtful as girls (no offense for the guys out there) =)

Good luck =)

Sorry, hon, but I'm siding with your boyfriend. There's not a man in the world who could come between me and my animals. The cats were there first. If you're that allergic, you never should have gotten involved in the first place.

if your allergies were something that you chose to overcome early on in the relationship....he had to have cat fur on him if he's that into cats and you would react if youre that deathly allergic. if you really want to be with him you'd find a way to compromise and not change him. you knew he had cats and you knew about your allergies. to expect him to change now is your problem. youre wrong in this thinking for him to give them up now. you chose to stay from the beginning. now, if you leave the relationship saying its because he didnt love you enough....youre very partially to blame for yours and his heartache. own it.

He sounds selfish to me. If he doesn't even care that his cat makes you sick... He must not be a very good provider or protector. I'd say tell him exactly how you feel about the situation, and if he refuses to change his behavior, leave. I know that sounds harsh, but you deserve a guy who will treat you with respect, not lower than his cat.

Some people just love their pets and you can't change that it's like asking them to abandon friends and family. I'm sure he cares about you you should try to persuade him to come to your house and also try to figure out a way to control your allergies.

Don't make him choose the cat over you. He will drop you like a hot rock. As for your allergy, shag at your place.
