I was watching tv and found out what this meant a while back. each tear drop means you have killed someone I believe. So if they have 1 tear drop, they want people to know that they have killed. Very common in prisons [:

the tear drop under your eyes really mean that u have killed some body or that your friend or somebody in your family has died....the tear is their forever so that mean you will always cry for the each and every day it does not mean your a gangsta so just chill..

It means you've killed someone or you are planning on killing someone, but some men get it just to get it. Rappers such a Lil Wayne have tear drops under his eyes, but I dont know if he actually killed someone.

It can mean a lot of different things, depending on where you are. When someone says that it means that you've been to jail, thats not the full story. It means that you've killed someone in jail.
It can also mean -
That you have a gang member that died in your gang.
That you killed someone for your gang.
That a friend or loved one died because of violence.
Either way they pretty much all have to do with violent crime.

I watched a James Woods movie "True Believer" where Woods was a pot smoking lawyer defending a prison inmate. Woods was attacked by someone who had a phoney painted tear drop painted on his face. An investigation determined that the tear drop tattoo is an identifying mark of a member of the Aryan Brotherhood gang. That is confirmed on wikipedia, where it also confirms many of your other answers saying that it's also the mark of a prison murderer. Either way, my daughter will not date such a sad clown.

Well, my uncle works in a court house and deals with hoodlums lol anyways he says it's for each person they have killed. It also depends on the gang to some its people killed or if they HAVE killed, others is for their rank, some just for show, some from a certain crime like if its blue and on the right the killed a guy by gun if its black and to the left it was from a stab. It depends on gangs though.
