For the past 2 years, my tranny hasn't sometimes been shifting from 1st to 2nd until about 26-28 MPH. After that happens, it goes into failsafe. Now it happens always right after start. I think it could be the pulse generator, because when this problem occurred first 4 years ago, the dealer replaced the pulse generator and it worked fine after that. Also, I wonder if corrosion on the battery can contribute to inaccurate voltage in the transmission. One dealer detected the codes p0740, p0743, p0722 (about 2 years ago) and said it would then need the car a few days to troubleshoot more. Another dealer read other codes (about a year ago), which I don't have yet, and said to replace the transmission. What do you think? Also, am I doing anything to the engine if I drive on 1st up to 26-28 MPH when the tranny switches or if I drive 15-20 MPH in 1st? I don't have an RPM meter, so hard to tell if it goes into the red. Is there anyway to start the vehicle and be immediately in failsafe?

This problem is most likely the pulse generators. Find the plug for them & clean the terminals. They come off the transmission & the plug is located under the airbox. It is blue in color by memory & is a 4 pin plug. You also need to twist the terminals on the pulse generator plug a small amount so the pin is a tighter fit in the socket. These vehicles are fitted with a speedo cable that induces whip in the speedo. There was a technical bulletin advising the fitment of an 80uf resistor across the speedo read switch to slow the signal down going back to the transmission control computer. Disconnect the battery terminals & clean them as a safety measure anyway. Can it cause damage? In the short term, no. In the long term, yes. You need to get this problem fixed & stop driving the car in failsafe. There is no way to start off in failsafe.

Somebody should put your transmission in "the last don"'s hands and push him off a tall bridge, don't you have anything better to do besides making nonsense comments about Hyundai's? Why not bother the sophisticates know nothings on the Mercedes board?

potentially. Unfortuantly, any problem with auto transmissions are expensive. It could be something simple or something complex, but either way, you'll have to have someone look at it and that is where they'll get you. Tell them to check the ECU and from there you can decide what you want to do

Sounds like you need to replace the pulse generators, they come as an assembly (#45955-28000) they are speed sensors which tell the trans how to shift and when. They located on top of the trans, under the air filter box. They retail for $55 and you could put them on yourself. If that has already been done, you will need to replace the trans. (#00268-28C00) it costs around $1100 for the trans, labor to install will be around $500, depending on who does it.

Iwould replace the puse generators, and disconnect all of the plugs to transmission and clean the contacts, most of trans problems is due to corrosion from the battery.
