The itching is often caused by a dramatic histamine reation.
It means you have sun-burned pretty badly! (and deeply, too)
A simple over the counter anti-histamine (as in allergy pills) will help significantly to reduce the uncomfortable itching sensation.
Lotions will help (as long as they are non-alcohol based) to keep the skin from further dehydrating, and give you time to heal.
Aloe (from the Aloe Vera plant) will also help with the uncomfortable burning sensation.

When I get sunburned on my back, chest or legs I soak a towel in cool water and lay it on me. It relieves the burning and itching. If you have ever been in a burn unit they keep some patients in a tub of water to relieve the pain.

Oatmeal bath is soothing to the skin- use warm not hot water. Pat skin dry, no rubbing!!!!! and apply aloe with vitamin e. And drink plenty of water! When you roast yourself a bit too long you lose fluids and need to replace them.

Aloe gel feels the best when I burn, it soothes the skin and should help with the itching. When it hurts apple cider vinegar on it can help take the "sting" out.

Get a bottle of pure aloe gel. Keep it on hand for ALLL burns. It works great. Whenever I've burned myself on my curling iron, I get the bottle, saturate it w/the gel, takes the burn away immediately & does not blister up, form a scab, it just disappears & leaves no sign of a burn period. Can't beat it.
