I live in a appartment ( I know someone is going to tell me i shouldnt have gotten a whippet if i live in an appartment, save your breath) but anyway i want to let him run, but im worried he wont come back to me, because i just got him and im not sure he knows his name, or that he needs to come to me when i call! obviously i cant run as fast as him so running with him is not a option
I would like to enroll him in some activities for greyhounds and whippets, but i just would like to let him run now....

what should i do, how would i test him to see if he would come back... help

Sadly they are a breed that is not well suited to going off lead not in a fenced area. One deer, squirrel or even a blowing bit of paper & zing off they go to give chase - and they don't look both ways when they get to the street and put it this way-- I saw the winner of the 2002 national run hard as he could after a fake rabbit with his owner behind shreaking his name (dog never heard her).
As for activities: www.asfa.org
www.whippetracing.org
also check out lure coursing on the www.akc.org s
many clubs have practices if you contact them

warning: lure coursing is open to registered and ILP (rescue) whippets with no breed DQ's
Racing is open to registered whippets only but some races are open to dogs with breed DQ.

Try to find an area that is totally fenced-- either a friend's yard, a dog park, a small school playground. Make sure he knows you have tasty treats with you, give him one and turn him loose. Even if he won't come when you call, eventually he'll get tired and come back to you or let you come to him. When you do catch him, give him a treat and that way you're accomplishing several things at once: teaching him to come when called, teaching him to answer to his name, AND letting him get some exercise!

By the way, I don't think an apartment is too small for a whippet but he will need lots of exercise!

Whoever didn't tell you that under no circumstances do you let a sighthound off leash is unbelievably irresponsible. Do not let a sight hound off leash in an unfenced area - ever!!! And that goes triple for a dog who doesn't even know you. If you do, you'll get him run over - no question! Whippets panic very easily, he'll be gone and he most definitely won't come to you - a stranger to him.

I have two dogs that arent "apartment" dogs either, heres what I do. I bought a pair of skates for me and weight vests for the dogs. I skate they run and the extra 5-10lbs in the weight vest makes a big difference. Do this a few times a week you pooch will be pooped and much happier. Its never a good idea to let your dog run alone bad things happen to good dogs all the time.

Don't you rember the show dog whippet story. Unless he is WELL trained to be off leash use a treadmill or a fenced in yard.

see if he likes food alot like bits of chicken if he does name the food...my dog knows its tot tots (lol) then when you go out if he comes to you shout tot tots or wotever and he/she will come for the food then you get hold of the collar.you must keep offering the food in your apartment and saying the chosen word when you give it to your dog so the dog knows that food is coming.my dog will stop even the most exciting thing if i shout tot tots but not if i say come here.he has me well trained.i think wippets only need short bursts of exercise so a short run will be fine.
