I adopted dog from shelter. Was in cage with other dogs. Was neutered next day. Could either of these places been the cause of the cough?

It is a vaccination for kennel cough. It can be given as an injection or as a spray given in the nostril. It is effective for 6 months. It shouldn't cost more that about $25- $35. Check the price in your area. Is your dog is coughing, sneezing, discharge from nose and or eyes, lethargic, not eating/drinking now ? If it came from a shelter it probably has kennel cough and need to see a vet ASAP to get antibiotics because if left untreated it can turn into pneumonia. Dont let it get worse...

Keep this dog isolated from others as it is very contagious to other dogs that are not vaccinated against it.

I see soooooo many dogs adopted from the shelter with kennel cough... it runs rampant in shelters!

no. That is really an optional vaccine. As you may know it vaccinates for kennel cough which is basically a doggy cold. If your dog were to get kennel cough it is not costly, or life threatening, mostly just a pain for both you and your dog. However time would clear it up, and a round of antibiotics would help speed things along. It doesn't sound likely that your dog will get kennel cough, and kennel cough is neither dangerous or expensive to treat so I don't see why you need to vaccinate for it. To put it this way our rescue, and most others, won't adopt to people whose dogs aren't UTD on shots, however when we are looking at the shots the dog should have gotten we don't include bordetella in order to consider the person's dog UTD on shots.

What Is Bordetella In Dogs

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Read more here https://biturl.im/aU7tX

The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don't achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren't putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.

The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.

Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.

What is the helpless? Unless I am forced to because I need to board my dogs I don't give bordetella because it isn't that effective and I'm opposed to most vaccines.

RE:
What's a Bordetella vaccine? Is it expensive?

My dog received it this week. It is not an injection, but it is sprayed (or in his case, dripped) into the dog's nose. It cost me around twelve dollars. The day care that I am looking at wants them to have it in their sytem for 7 days before they will even look at his. My dog had kennel cough as a puppy and it was not fun at all.

Bordetella is a the vaccine for kennel cough. Its fairly inexpensive, where I live it ranges from ten to twenty dollars. If your dog is around other dogs for training or if you kennel him/her its a good idea to have it.
