I would not flush it for him, if it's 4a, I would wake him up to come flush it and any other time it happens. he would be so tired of me bugging him to come flush the toilet it would sink in eventually.
Maybe that's inconvenient... maybe you could try posting a BIG sign over the bathroom. That's what I had to do to remind everyone in the house to jiggle the handle when the toilet was acting up.

I suggest writhing a nice size sign and taping it over or on the toilet. Other than that, sounds like you all have a pretty good friendship. Although, I do agree...that is disgusting...maybe it is a problem that will hopefully fix itself. U can either put up w/ it or let it go. I would just continue to tell him how nasty and inconsiderate he is acting. Maybe he is doing this on purpose. Hmmm...who in their right mind would ALWAYS forget to flush. My five yr old remembers just fine.

This is your best friend you're talking about here, and you've already tried to talk to him nicely about it it sounds like. That's highly disgusting, though. Maybe some of the smartasses who are suggesting you do something drastic are on to something.
My first year in college I had a suite situation. Me and my roomate shared a bathroom with 2 guys in another room. The two rooms were joined by a bathroom. My roomate was similar to yours, except that he never, ever helped clean the bathroom and he usually made quite a mess of it.
One day I was in there cleaning and this jerk gets up and comes on in to use the bathroom I'm in the middle of cleaning. So I decided it was time for a change.
It was possible to lock the bathroom door so that if you didn't have a cozy relationship with the guys next door you could lock them out. So I locked him in the bathroom and told him he better start cleaning up his mess. Best part was when he banged on the neighbor's door to get them to let him out and one of them hollered "not until you start cleaning up mother######." I didn't even know they were home.
I don't think you should have to pen your buddy in the can like that, but try something drastic. You leave your poop there for him to find, maybe.

I think that this is just a bad habit of his and bad habits are best changed when you have his cooperation! So if he's willing come up with a plan to stop the problem such as everytime he doesn't flush he has to pay a potty fine or something stupid such as that! He doesn't flush he has to buy you lunch or make dinner or buy you a six pack. The funnier you can make it the easier it will be for him to go along and stop.

I think you have done about all you can do by repeatedly asking him to flush. It sounds like the friendship is more important than his bathroom habits, so perhaps put up with the problem now, complain often, leave a note on the wall; and begin to look for a 2bedroom/2 bath apartment.

Tell your roomate that if it continues, you'll lock him out of the bathroom until he learns proper bathroom etiquette.
That's probably extreme. But he's just not getting the point.
If he is home when it happens again, go get him bring him back to the bathroom and ask him to fix the problem. If he's not home....(this is going to be gross) leave it for him when he gets home, with a note that says "fix this"

Why don't you put a bunch of laminated notes on the walls of the bathroom, so when he sits on the toilet he sees them, also when he turns around, and when he washes his hands, etc, etc. It could be something funny, so he is not offended. I am sure now he will REMEMBER what his duties are (LOL).

That's disgusting! I think I would threaten to scoop it out and pour it on his bed if it ever happened again!
