If you want to risk skin cancer, age spots and a leather texture when your older then tanning is what your looking for. I used to tan a lot but stopped because I realized how awful an act it really is.
First of all... you were born white.. why not be happy with who you are? Secondly the only reason people tan in the first place (well most of them) is because Tan is what society tells us if beautiful.
I'm so white at times I can blend in with some of my white tank tops lol but you know what.... I like it because I know I have healthy smooth porcelain looking skin.
I don't have to worry about wrinkles as much and age spots are not a problem (as long as I protect my skin from the sun).
Sun isn't the bad guy though because we do need Vitamin D.
But if you insist on tanning :) then I wouldn't recommend more that 20 minutes at a time in the tanning bed 3 times a week. Oh and use a bronzer without the burning effect so that you can achieve a tan faster.
Your skin sheds a good layer by the end of every 30 days.. so to keep your tan try going at least 3 or 4 times a month.

Well I wouldn't recommend going to a tanning booth... Jergens natural glow daily moisturizer. It's the most natural tan you can get in a bottle: no streaking or orange. I haven't found a bad rating on it yet. It won the most valuable product award from redbook mag. and best of beauty breakthrough award from allure mag... I did hear it kind of smells though.
but you're determined to fake bake, here's another answer.
"you need to start out slow since you have fair skin. You should probably go every other day for a couple weeks to get a base tan and then every 2 or 3 days after that to keep it. The only reason why those people turn orange is bc they go everyday of the year and use those dark tanning lotions...
As long as you don't do that, you should have a nice color to ya... "
Hope you get tan and stay cancer-free : p

Hmmm I guess you should get a spray tan because most likely you'd burn in the sun.
I really dunno because I'm tan naturally.
