**Ya Evam Veda Brahmaiva Bhavat
This is an incomplete sentence----Ya(ha)=the one --Evam=this way---Veda=understands/possesses knowledge-----Bhavathi= becomes---- Brahmam eva= verily the Brahmam--this way means whichway-what he/she understands?
It may be something like this "Aham Brahmaasmi-ya evam Veda Brahmaiva Bhavathi" -One who understands he/she himself or herself remains( a part of) Brahmam(the Universal spirit) let he /she become the Brahmam (Strictly speaking Brahmam has no parts(Poornaathah, Poornamitham, Poornamaadhaya)
This sentence pertains only to Hindu Religion---not INDIANS- In India there are 850 million Hindus--108 million Muslims(the largest Muslim population in the world)--20 million Christians--20 million Sikhs-about 2 million Buddhists +Jains+ Parsis+ Ahamedias+Bahais(Both Hated by Muslims) etc,etc

Lord Sri Krishna states in Bhagavad gita 4.24 and 14.27
brahmarpanam brahma havir
brahmagnau brahmana hutam
brahmaiva tena gantavyam
brahma-karma-samadhina
A person who is fully absorbed in Krishna consciousness is sure to attain the spiritual kingdom because of his full contribution to spiritual activities, in which the consummation is absolute and that which is offered is of the same spiritual nature.
brahmano hi pratisthaham
amrtasyavyayasya ca
sasvatasya ca dharmasya
sukhasyaikantikasya ca
And I am the basis of the impersonal Brahman, which is immortal, imperishable and eternal and is the constitutional position of ultimate happiness.
Excerpts from the purport by by A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Founder-Acharya of ISKCON
(International Society for Krishna Consciousness)
The constitution of Brahman is immortality, imperishability, eternity, and happiness. Brahman is the beginning of transcendental realization. Paramatma, the Supersoul, is the middle, the second stage in transcendental realization, and the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the ultimate realization of the Absolute Truth. Therefore, both Paramatma and the impersonal Brahman are within the Supreme Person.
Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.2.11,
"The Absolute Truth is realized in three phases of understanding by the knower of the Absolute Truth, and all of them are identical. Such phases of the Absolute Truth are expressed as Brahman, Paramatma, and Bhagavan."
While in Tirupati Prabhupada commented:
. . just like if you see a mountain. Just like surrounding your this place, Tirupati, there are so many hills. From the distant place, your vision is not clear. You simply see something like cloudy, the same mountain. But if you make little further progress, you see the same mountain or hill greenish. And if you actually go in the same hill, you will find there are so many animals, so many men and so many houses. So object is the same, but from different angle vision, it appears differently. Similarly, unless one can understand Krishna perfectly, he realizes the Absolute Truth as impersonal, nirakara Brahman. Unless one understands Krishna perfectly well, he cannot understand what is Paramatma, which is realized by yogic principles. But when you understand Krishna, then you understand Paramatma and Brahman also. This is the verdict of the sastra. Just like if you have got one lakh of rupees, your possession of few thousands of rupees or few hundred of rupees are already there.

how can you become brahma, just by realizing brahman?
its spiritual suicide to put down personalism, individuality. by the phrase "aham brahmasmi" it is meant that - we are spirit. we are all spirit souls, embodied, souls in a body = (which is very much real). not that we're all spirit...lets merge...into...nothingness... no. thats not true, and it doesn't make sense.
sanskrit is a very...how shall i say...it can be translated in so many ways. the translation you have, "One who realizes Brahman becomes Brahma" can mean - your consiousness becomes elevated when you realize that we're not this body, we're all spirit souls, embodied - of course, in the material world. our objective is to go back home, back to godhead, to the spiritual world, where we truly belong. the first step in spiritual realization is to realize that we're not this body, we're spirit souls, though we are embodied. but we can't become brahma, as in - merge into brahma. thats impossible. this whole concept of merging, is not true. it is possible, though, to get promoted to the level of brahma, which is currently the highest position under the Supreme Personality of Godhead. There are ways to get promoted, but you cant merge into him. Brahma is an individual, in a very high position, the managerial position, controlling this world. it is possible, though pious activites, etc., to get promoted to that position, if thats what you want, to have his responsibilities. (the world "brahma" - is a title, not a name of the individual. same with "indra", etc.) but that isnt the goal, to go to the heavenly planets, and assume a high position, because ultimately, we will have to come back to this material world, when the benefit of our pious activities gets exhausted. we want to go to the spiritual world - Goloka, because it is proven by the scriptures, bhagavad gita, by Krsna Himself, that having gone to the spiritual world, one never returns.
read more in the bhagavad gita as it is - by prabhupada (its the only version that is translated excactly and perfectly), and ask your questions at www.krishna.com. (you can also read the bhagavad gita online, through the eLibrary there)
good luck, and Hare Krishna!

Can you expect a reply from a born blind person to explain you about the different colours?
This question may be asked to the one who has realized it himself and is enlightened soul.
He will not reply you but he will give you the "eyes" to see the colours yourself and enjoy the beauti of creation.

It is only for one who realises. There is no need for us to feel pride in this.
The statement is true for all the human beings. And we Indians can also benefit.

As per Vedanta philosophy of hinduism... it is the Brahmm, the supreme consiousness who is all .
Sarvam Khalvidam Brahm... whatever is there is God himself
So as per this philosophy we are Brham who is enjoying his creation through our individual ego.
When we transcend this temporary/transitory ego..we see our real self, which is Brahm.
So we do not become Brahm... We are Brahm but re-discover ourself and enjoy the bliss of this discovery
