Not answering to get points.

Anyway, most people in their youth want to feel like they are taken more seriously than they actually think of themselves. Getting a tattoo or piercing is a way of showing you can take risks and that your not afraid of "looking" or being different.

Most feel it gives them a sense of security and that others may look up to them for being the "cool" kid. It's all about the need for acceptance in our society. If your accepted then your IT.. if your not accepted then well your seen as a loner and not someone many would seem to want to be around.

Sadly, some think that tattoos and piercings make the person.. when it's the other way around.

In this overpopulated, anonymous world, they are our choice to define ourselves from the general population. The more individual, interesting and personally appreciable they are, the more we feel like we stand out in the crowd without alienating ourselves. A lot of the younger generation who are getting them are very 'me and now' oriented, they arent thinking about 20 years down the track when the tattoo mightnt be so likeable.

Personally, my tattoos all have meaning in them, my first was a design i had drawn up since i was 17, got it done at 20, to celebrate finally getting a job that held financial stability for me, the design had meaning to honor my father who instilled the sense of financial stability in me in the first place. The other 4 that i have had done celebrate other such milestones that have individual meaning for me, birth of first child, commitment to a relationship, birth of second child and a spiritual awakening within my self resulting in confidence and self assurance.

Getting a tattoo with the teenagers almost seems to be a coming of age thing for them now, they are old enough to decide what they want permanently marked on their bodies, so it almost seems to be an assertion of independance from their parents.

For the 20-somethings, most seem to have a reasoning behind the tattoos, passions, marking time, honoring individuals and themselves.

Tattoos can be as individual as you choose, or they can blend in with the other popular trends. It is still a way to advertise our uniqueness, but at the same time blend in, without compromising our own mental well being.

Why are tattoos so popular with teenagers and people in their early 20's? Good question.

I think now that age range gets tattoos because of celebrities. Whatever a celebrity does most people around that age range want to do it aswell because they think it's fashionable. It's all advertising if for example Paris Hilton is seen with the latest phone everyone wants the latest phone and rushes out and gets it.

Before celebrities used to have a tattoo in place no one could see them because they didn't want to be judged. Now adays celebrities have tattoos in the most visable places. Because top celebrities like Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Britney, Angelina Jolie ect have such visable tattoos and people think they look cool, teenagers want to get tattoos to be just like their idols.

The tattoo part of yahoo answer is filled with people asking the same question..... "I want a tattoo but i don't know what i should have? What tattoo should i have and where should i put it"

People like that only want the tattoo as a fashion statement they have no clue what they want the only thing they know is they want it. It's like when you were younger if someone had the latest toy or nike shoes everyone would want them. Well thats what tattoos have become to certain people a craze. The problem is a tattoo is for LIFE!!!!! I LOVE tattoo but i HATE the way it has become a fashion statement. The most fashionable place in 2003-2005 to get a tattoo was the lower back. 2006 and onwards wrist tattoos are becoming the new fashionable place. The most fashionable tattoos on men are tribal and on girls it's stars. They have no meaning people just get them because everyone else has them.

Tattoo removal will be a MASSIVE business in the next 5-10years because all these teens that are getting meaningless tattoos today will regret them and have them removed or covered when they get abit older.

Teenagers want to rebel against their parents. What better way than to get a tattoo? Sometimes people are addicted, whether their new tattoo gives them more confidence, makes them feel sexier, or they just like the pain. People will never stop getting tattoos.

i don't think that tattoos are any more popular with teenagers and twentysomethings than they are with anybody else. granted i am 25, most of my friends are older than me my parents are 50 and they all have tattoos. i don't think it has much to do with popularity so much as a love of the art and having something permanent on the skin that displays a bit of who you are. i definitely didn't get any tattoos bcause they were popular.

Because it's a way to express yourself, to rebel and permanently show who you are, where you've been and how you've grown. Tattoos can be some of the most beautiful art. They are also a way of immortalizing someone you've lost in a way that can never be lost or taken away.

I am 20. i have 5 tats.and going for full sleeves. rib piece, left elbow, left wrist, left forearm, and lipstick on my neck. The way i look at it is that it sets you apart from all other people. i dont think it makes me bad *** or sexy or any of that non sense. the tats i pick are visually appealing to me. its something that i like and think looks very nice. whats funny is how people say they look trashy. HA! ive had men and women in their 40's or so come up to me at DISNEY LAND, and say wow thats a beautiful tattoo. and whats funnier is they wont have any at all.

As far as I am concerned tattoos are a sign of individuality. I personally have 3 tattoos each my fave color and with my children's name in them. Tattoos are mainly for expressive use, though some people do it for other reasons other than themselves

at our local shop there's a guy in there, business type, 40s who's a regular
age has nothing to do with tattoos and their popularity

it is an art form and a way of expression. it shows a specific time in your life, it can be for someone either in memory or to show how much you care. it is an alternative way of living and pernamently setting yourself apart from others. they can be trashy or classy depending upon how you wear them. just like certain clothes make you look bad certain tattoo styles can do the same. they also show how well you take care of yourself depending upon how fast they fade or kinda smear.
