You are entitled to one copy of your report from each of the big three reporting agencies each year. Get yourself on a schedule where you check one report every 4 months and then it becomes like your own FREE version of credit monitoring.

The number one site is: www.annualcreditreport.com or call 1 (877)322-8228. For more information, go to: www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/credit/freereports.pdf.
Once you are on www.annualcreditreport.com, they will ask you which site you want a report from:
www.equifax.com
www.experian.com
www.transunion.com
or if you want a report from any 2 or all 3 of those credit reporting bureaus. The credit report is free. If you want to know your credit number, it will cost you a small fee, which you can pay by credit card.
The best idea is to order a report from one credit bureau, then request a report from a different bureau in four months, then request a report from the third bureau. That way, you have recent information every four months. All 3 bureaus allow you to report errors by web, by phone, or by mail.

www.freecreditreport.com just be careful everytime you check your credit report it lowers your score. Stupid but I found out the hard way. Don't check it often just check it when you think something may be wrong.
