canker sores appear as small white nodules under or around the tongue as well as the buccal mucosa (inside your mouth) They are caused by a virus but are harmless except for the annoying pain and duration of them. Often triggered by stress and thought to be caused by metabolic deficiencies, the true cause is unknown. My suggestions is keep your mouth clean with tooth paste and mouthwash. These are different from cold sores which normally appear on your lips of face. Peace.

No, not herpes virus. Cold sores are caused by a herpes virus. Totally different. Nobody currently knows what causes canker sores. However, quoting from the source listed below:

"Canker sores can be triggered by emotional stress, dietary deficiencies (especially iron, folic acid, or Vitamin B-12), menstrual periods, hormonal changes, food allergies, and similar situations. They occur most commonly with viral infections. In some cases, the cause can not be identified."

The true cause of canker sores is not definitively known. I have read speculation that they may be caused by an autoimmune malfunction, where your immune system briefly attacks your own tissues.

As far as I know, there is no evidence that they are contagious, or that they are caused by bacteria or viruses. Cold sores, however, are caused by a form of the herpes virus, and it's very contagious, so it's important to know the difference.

So far sored inside your mouth are a mystery. The cause is yet unknown, but seems to run in families. The sores have been associated with trauma (biting inside of mouth), faulty immune system function (body attacks itself), Vitamin B-12 deficiency, GI tract disease, food allergies, acidic foods, some spices such as cinnamon, peppermint, viral illness, lupus, folic acid deficiency, or anemia. I am sure the list goes on, but the bottom line is medicine does not know for sure the cause. There is pain relievers available at the drug store if one gets uncomfortable. If a sore is unusually large, lasts more than three weeks or is very uncomfortable, seek treatment because something else may be going on. Good luck.

A cold sore appears around the mouth or on the lip and is caused by the Herpes Virus. Canker sores are different and not caused by a virus.

It's caused by Herpes virus, which many people have dormant in their bodies near their hormone glands.
Canker sores and cold sores (both of which I get often), are Herpes virus outbreaks that are cause by hormonal imbalances such as stress, heat, etc. They aren't harmful, but they are contagious.
