If you mailed a tax return without a SSN, you have not filed a proper return. What you mailed WILL be rejected. However you file a correct return, it is no late. If you owe the IRS, you also owe a late filing fee and interest.

It depends on what it is. If it was your tax return and you sent a W2, they have your SS#, and you can forget about it.
