My job does not require to talk a lot, but they are situations where you have to talk. Some of my other coworkers have tried to talk to him but they say he hardly responds. So I have to work with him, but never says anything. I turn around and I see him handing me stuff, without saying "Here you go". I have heard him talk on the phone but at work nothing. The thing is that he is 22 he should be able to talk.

The problem may be that he is shy, and does not know how to confront people. Start conversations with him, askign about his day if theres anytihgn that he needs help with or talk about. He could also be having some troubles at home with his family or girlfriend, so don't go on thta subject. Smile politely at him with a reasuring look that you are a friend and not a foe.

Is your coworker new to the job? If so, he may checking out the scene first before jumping into a conversation.

If he isn't new, maybe he has "problems" like stuttering perhaps? I stutter and sometimes I don't say anything to save myself the embarrassment of stuttering in public.

I like the idea of taking him out for lunch or on a break. Ask is he has any hobbies. That may draw him out.

Or, it may just be the fact that he is a quiet guy and doesn't talk much.

If you are really concerned and the lack of speaking is affecting his work, speak to your supervisor.

Count your blessings! Have you ever worked with a colleague who talks nonstop? All day, every day? Your coworker may loosen up a bit once he gets used to you, or he may just be the kind of guy who doesn't like idle chatter. As long as your work isn't impeded by his silence, there's nothing to worry about.

Some people don't like to talk and only do it if it's absolutely necessary! Take him out to lunch one day and maybe he'll talk a little more! Sounds like he's got a lot on his mind that he needs to talk about!!
