The question concerned FLAT panel sets, not RPTV (rear projection TV) RPTV has the "special" lamp that does have a tendency to go out, and be a bit pricey. The flat panel sets are all using a back-light made up of an array of fluorescent lamps, they do not give very much trouble at all. If you want a vibrant bold picture, LCD is the way to go. Plasma sets are good, but they tend to show a more subdued color. and tend to be more power hungry. Plasma sets are also heavier, and give off more heat. My personal vote would be for the LCD flat panel set. If I am limited to a choice of the flat sets.

This really depends on how you plan on using your tv
If you play a lot of video games, watch a lot of sports, or want to use it as a pc monitor i would not recommend a plasma because they can have burn in which can not be removed and most times is not covered under warranty. also if you live over 6500 ft plasma cell may make a buzzing sound that wont go away
Plasma do have more colors and a larger viewing angel but they are always better displayed in lower lighting rooms.

LCD are great for stationary display cheaper and lighter work better with rooms with more windows and more light.

As far as picture quality, plasma is superior in my opinion, but more expensive. LCD types use special lamps which are expensive and tend to have a short life.
