IMO - The 12 gauge is a gun for larger game like deer and turkey. I believe there are more varieties of loads available for it as well, such as slugs, 00 buck, and bird shot, among others.
20 gauge is good choice for birds.
That said, are you looking for a gun for anything particular?
For home defense, I would (and did) choose a 12 gauge.

A 16 gauge will do anything a 20 gauge will do with pellets and power left over.
The problem is, 16's are not very common and the guns and ammo are more pricy than 20's or 12's.
12 Gauge shotguns are the best choice for general purpose shotgunning. The 20 gauge, especially in a light, elegantly styled SXS double is best for upland bird shooting.
The 16 is fading fast. If you buy a 16 gauge, you'd better order a shotshell reloader and a couple of thousand hulls to make sure you can keep it shooting in the future.

20 gauge is a gun that has less kick. It's ok for turkeys, I've killed quite a few with one. 16 is a little bit bigger than a 20, but they don't make shells that are specifically for hunting turkeys for the 16. I hunt with a 12 gauge, and it's a good turkey gun. 16 and 20 are better for stuff like quail and dove.

the 20 gauge is alot more common, but they will both do the job decently. I hunt turkey with a 12 though, because itll get more shot into a 3'' shell, and i can get a pattern i like with a full choke.

I used a 16 Ga wingmaster for years to shoot pheasent. I have killed deer and turkey with my 20 Ga. I now use a 12 Ga for almost everything. I still use the 16 Ga. because it was my great grandpa's and a Remington never dies.
