I have chronic problem of itchy back, primarily in the upper region. Dermatologist just keeps prescribing steroidal ointment and I'm concerned about long term effect on the skin.

Betadine is great for disenfecting but probably won't help itch.

Non-steroidal options include lidocaine products like Solorcaine or Benadryl cream or spray.

Long term-effects from steroid creams are possible, but if you under the care of a dermatologist he or she will be well aware of this and should manage your medicines accordingly. I would defer to your MD's opinion rather than trying to treat it over the counter.

Calamine lotion would work better. It has a cool and soothing effect. Some find aloe vera useful.

There are also meds like antihistamines, however, you would be better off knowing what is causing the issue and dealing with the cause.

Dry skin, allergies, there are many things you could do -- it depends on what the issue is and what you have tried.
