what so you think that if a woman is unwed then she is incapable of raising her children. well if the courts can find the dad then good luck getting my kid from me! as a single mother i do everything for my son with no help whatsoever there's no break, but i will agree with something the courts when deciding who should get custody should take it on a case by case basis (whether wed or unwed) the children are not always better off with their mother in fact they are not always better of with a biological relation so its wrong that mothers seem to automatically get custody, but don't be ridiculous you said it its a new age so why judge the unwed

I believe it is financial, as the mother could always claim that the random guy isn't really her baby's daddy and then they are forced to do the paternity testing. Once they spend all the time and money on determining paternity, then the two parents will have time to come up with a custodial arrangement and readdress the court system.
Now both sides will accuse each other of being drug addicts, violent alcoholics and so forth so the courts will now have to pay for drug screening, access to personal medical records which are supposed to be protected. It goes on and on, but basically the taxpaying citizens in this country will be footing these major bills for two jerks who can't agree on doing whatever is right for the children, whomever the custodial parent should be.

I guess the courts assume that the mother has more of a bond w/the child, especially with newborns, and very young children.

I think they do. I know a guy that is raising 3 of his 4 kids by himself. Alot of people get joint custody adn there is no child support involved at all

some fathers do have the kids (they seem to go to the mother unless there is special reasons)
