Why do many black people have the last name Jones ?

Many African-Americans simply adopted names that were familiar to them, such as the names of slaveholders or counties.

A quick check of the African-American database of more than 48,000 surnames, shows that there are more Browns than Jones. Black, Davis, Smith, Adams, Jefferson, Washington, and Franklin are also popular. Interestingly, there are only six families named Lincoln.

I don't know that I personally know any black people with the last name Jones, but it could depend on to where you are refering geographically. Back when slavery was practiced, it was common for slaves to be "given" the last name of their "masters". Logically, if there were more whites with the name Jones, there could be quite a few black people now with that last name, especially in that area.

Many black people have surnames that would be considered "common". When slavery was prevalent and afterward, African-Americans often choose their own last names. So, "Jones" was apparently a popular one. The fact that so many of them probably knew someone already named "Jones" probably had a lot to do with it. And it was simple and easy to spell.

Maybe a strong correlation with so many pink people and brown people having the surname Jones. Maybe skin color has little to do with it. Ya think?

not really but it is a very common last name like white people have the last name smith or a last name ending in "ski"
