I was wondering if anyone knows of a good psychiatrist that will prescribe Xanax. My old psychiatrist was real stingy with the prescriptions---but I think the benefits outway the risks. I feel crazy and like I am going to die when I have an anxiety attack--and sometimes mine last for hours on end (not just a few minutes)...

Anyone know of a good doctor in Houston, Texas?

It is a legit and necessary for my existance--and I am almost out of my medication! Thanks.

I live in Houston, TX. and have seen Dr. Root for depression. I had been to many others before he seen my need right off for medication. We tried numerous till we found what helped along with his therapy. He saved my life. He is in Medical Place 1 near St. Joseph Hosp. I think his first name is Lawrence or Larry. You will like him. I was very comfortable with him.~~jill
PS- He will decide what you need !!!!

Depending on the type of anxiety you have, it might be just what you need...but usually, for on-going anxiety, most doctors will prescribe an SSRI (Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac, Celexa, etc.) If these are isolated episodes where you can have an idea of when the anxiety is going to happen, the Xanax isn't such a bad choice, but can make you a bit spacy (probably wouldn't be my first choice to help with anxiety at school) another option would be something like propranolol (a beta-blocker that helps with symptoms of anxiety--like fast heart rate and sweating) which is often used for performance-related anxiety. All kind of depends on your situation, your allergies and if you're taking other medications.

You can go to a general MD and tell him/her about the anxiety--most will prescribe Xanax for short-term use. Then, check the phone book and with friends for a new psychiatrist.

Let your fingers do the walking, use the phone book. I have heard of only one in your area, Dr. S. Freud. If you contact him I am sure he could help. Good Luck!
