There are two breeds that I will attack first before they get the chance to attack me. They are the Akita and the Chow. They should be outlawed in every state except VA.

Akita's are wonderful dogs there elegant in every way shape or form, but in a way they are like the dobe, pitbull etc, people have given them a bad name either through experience or just something they have read.
below is on line showing why people think of the Akita that way
1: Akita, some hunting dogs and some dogs used as competitive fighting dogs, however it must be made clear that the common idea that the Akita is a 'Japanese Fighting Dog' is some way away from factual accuracy. Whilst the Akitas ancestry may lie with dogs used for fighting (see the Edo Period below) the modern day Akita is a long way from this and indeed most good breeders will not breed from dogs that are known to have aggressive natures.
thats one problem they use to be fighting dogs & people still think they are like that.
2:As far as the family children are concerned, there are few worries. Akitas are devoted, patient friends and protectors of children. Akitas are typically very gentle with children, and it is said that Japanese mothers often left their children with only the Akitas to watch over and protect them. Remember, however, that young children should never be left unattended with a pet. When raised indoors with children, they can be excellent companions.
No body really seems to care about the above they still have fighting imprinted in the brains.
3: Akitas do, however, have a tendency to be very aggressive to other dogs and small animals and are capable of ferocity. It is not uncommon for an Akita to catch and kill small (or even large) animals (including cats, guinea pigs, rabbits and small dogs) if it is allowed to wander and should therefore never be allowed to run off its lead around other animals.
People see that it can kill things they get scared of the breed, any dog can kill it just has to be trained rather than letting them run riot while they are out cause you get these owners who have no control over there dog calling fluffy fluffy in such a week feeble voice even I would not listen especially if I was called fluffy lol

Akitas are great and beautiful dogs
They however are not the right dog for many people
Akitas are strong and strong willed and many people do not give the dogs the leadership, training, attention and exercise that they need. When the dogs needs are not met bad situtations can develop.
My friends all know that I am crazy for the time I spend training my dog (a Keeshond) and teaching obedeince classes. But then most of them are crazy for the same reasons.

I love them and love theri personalities.
I however hate the hair and can not deal with that aspect.
I have short haired dogs.
My sister has an Akita, Moose and he is one of the sweetest dogs. He loves the mail man and the UPS guy. He really likes people. He is a big drooly fun dog.

i like them i had one once she was great i did end up giving her back to the person i got her from after about a year cause i could not give her the attention she needed to stay active and such..but the home she came from was like a second home to me who had about 5 akitas (they breed them so i am not sure how many were their pets or puppies waiting for homes) and they all where great .the only time i have seen any problems from them was when a stranger would sneak up on the mom with the puppies , i personally like great danes tho

Akitas are beautiful dogs! Each to his/her own, but I don't think you're crazy for keeping them. Do you race them?

I think they are beautiful, and very affectionate to their families. But, I do not like that some can be dog aggressive, and I would hate the twice a year heavy shedding of their thick under coat. I think they need a strong owner that is very loving!
