You will have to be able to pass a basic physical examination conducted by a physician to show that you are capable of undertaking such a demanding activity. There are cetain guidelines concerning eyesight, reflexes, balance and cardio-vascular capacity. Every fighter -- professional or amature -- is required to pass a physical at the weigh-in before every fight.

Next, look up gymnasiums in your town. Ask instructors about their qualifications. If you intend to compete, look for a roster or paper snips that give information about the records and/or championships of the clubs current or former members. They should be posted somewhere in the gym.

Finally, be prepared to take your licks. You'll never know what it takes to win until you know what it's like to lose. Night after night you will be defeated by better, more experienced, fighters in the sparring ring. A good trainer will let you know how and why you're getting your butt kicked and provide instructions on how to prevent that from happening in the future. You must stay with it.

As the first poster said. It's a skill you will take years to learn; you will need to forgo your favorite foods and some of the other things you like to do, while training.

Get started at a local gym.
