Something with complex carbs and a little bit of protein and fat. Idealy would be a 100% whole wheat bagel with reduced fat cream cheese.

About 3 hours before race time so digestion is not bothered by the race, nor bringing on nausea if she runs hard. I know a kid on a cross country team whose Dad gets up at 3 AM to prepare his son a good breakfast when he has an 8:00 AM race time.
Not a heavy meal, a good ratio of carbs to protein, of about 3 or 4 to 1, not too much fat. Piece of fruit to follow-up (Anti-oxidant clean-up to protect young arteries). Beyond that, something she likes so she is looking forward to the meal and the race. Drink some diluted juice; OJ is among the best since you get a good potassium boost to help prevent overheating.
Be sure she gets a good 5-10 minute warmup. You use very little energy relative to the 5K, and you can have a more relaxed but faster start.

I'll actually also be running a 5k race this august. Defienetly something that gives her energy. They have those protein bars, maybe a turkey sandwich, fruit, and something to drink like water or gatoraid. No soda or anything like that or cake because that could give her a stomach ache and you don't want that. Tell her I said Good Luck!!!!

12 hours before the race she should eat a pasta dish--then the carbs will be at their peak when she is running. As for breakfast, she should drink water and Gatorade, and eat some good proteins--eggs bacon and a bit of carbs--like toast.
Good luck I hope she does well!

most runners eat pancakes or spaghetti before a race. have her drink some gatorade, too. she shouldn't eat right before the race, but a couple of hours before. read this article.

Never give her something sugary ... that will only give her the "crash and burn" effect. Something starchy is a good choice. Potato, pasta etc ... are good, as they slowly release their energy giving properties. I'm wishin' her luck! :)
