Anyone found a cure for painful ears when on a plane, please? 14 yr old and cries with the pain every year we go on holiday. Doc just tells her to suck a boiled sweet. Doesn't work. Nothing else wrong with ears, and she's not a kid who easily cries, so the pain must be really bad. Thanks

Try chewing gum. Chewing relieves the pressure in the ears. Also your pharmacy/chemist should have some ear stoppers that work on flights. They are very effective.

In my youth, I worked as an Air Hostess (Cabin Attendant) for A local airline, so often came across this problem and it can be extremely painful.

Unfortunately, it is fairly common and is related to the air pressurization of the cabin, which in turn causes pressure to the ears, babies in particular often suffer terribly.

I have found that the best cure is for the victim to hold their nose and mouth closed and "blow" through their nose, this will equalize the pressure in the ears.

Hopefully this will help your daughter.

What works for me, for both sinuses and ears, is to take a decongestant such as "Contac" (the 12 hour kind), about two hours before the flight. Hope this helps.
