It was also known as bitter gall and may have been a slight pain reliever. Contrary to what your first answerer says, Jesus refused it. And even if he had drunk it the sword through His side made sure He was dead. The custom for criminals was that after they were taken down from crucifixion, their legs were broken just in case they were still alive. This stopped them from running away. Jesus was different in that the sword was used, thus fulfilling prophesy that no bone of His body would be broken.

Mark 15:23And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not.
Mark 15:30 says
30Save thyself, and come down from the cross.
But Mark 15:36 says
36And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.
Matthew 27 says
34They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.
48And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.
Luke says
36And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar
John says
29Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
30When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
It was on a sponge and the sponge was put on a reed and lifted up to his mouth, its not like He drank it ,they touched it to His lips

It was gall, which is snake venom. The purpose for this was so that He would appear dead when the Roman soldiers came to break His legs. It was to keep Him alive until He was removed from the cross.

Vinegar. In those days, medicines were often dissolved in vinegar, so the ressurection could best be explained by him drinking a tincture of vinegar and opium, falling unconcious and then waking up a couple of days later.
