I deal with fractures all day and everyday please please dont put anything down a cast this will scratch the skin or sometimes leave to an open wound with out you knowing, this will get infected and some times and yes i have seen this turn to gangereen .We also advice patients if they have an itch to get a spoon and tap the cast where the area is itchy, this does help.If the problem continues go bck to the plaster room and mention this to them and they should change the cast for you.Good Luck

1]Take your pain med if you need it.
2]Take Benadryl for extra itching.
3] Don't put anything in the cast that you can 'lose' [ comb, pencil ]. If you use a ruler or straightened hanger, make sure end is smooth.
4] Put a blow dryer on cool - that works great for some!

i have broken my right arm twice...and im right handed so i know just how you feel. the doctor messed up the second time i broke it and i was in a cast for about 4 months in total...not fun!!! it was one just like yours as i broke my arm in four places from my wrist to my upper arm...

i used to use a knitting needle to actually scratch the itching...but to relieve it in the long term i got some anti-inflammatories...they did wonders and really did help to stop the pain and itching...check with your doctor and see what they think about getting you some...

If the cast was only part of your arm, or leg, a knitting needle helps; but with the whole of the arm and the crook at the elbow, I think you have a problem.
But get someone to attack it from the wrist and another from the top of the arm.
Good luck and best wishes

get a clothes hanger..[a metal one]...stretch it out...and stick it in and scratch!
i had a cast for six months,so i feel your pain!it sucks..bad,i know.i tried many things, but this seemed to work the best for me.
never put any lotion or powder in to relieve the itch..as this will only make it worse and cause you to take more pain killers.......which........might make you break something esle!
man...good luck and god bless you! happy scratching!

a long stick or ruler..but be careful when I used to work in an emergency room many people dropped pens, rulers, sticks and all kinds of things in their casts and they had to come see us to get them out!
