Would you stop and listen to yourself, slow down instead of telling him you dont know what to say, since your at it anyways then figure out what it is you want to say and then say it, why drag this on? You might want to ask yourself what did James see in Shelby that attracted him to her. Maybe this is something you should ask James. Ask why did they break up. Was Shelby someone that was promiscuous? Maybe she wasn't and that was the problem. If the answer is yes, do you want to go with someone who is attracted to someone like that.

Since you sound as if you are in school (since you are familiar with who James' last girlfriend), I would accept his offer if he was willing to go on a double date. They can be a lot of fun. Go to a movie with someone friends. Maybe even a bunch of friends. Then see how he is with them. Ask your friends what kind of feelings that get from him. Have him meet your parents.
