I can afford up t $5000, I'm looking for reliability, and NOT a wagon. I love all the 850s, would it be smart to invest!?

I am not sure what problems the previous poster is talking about but I have owned 6 of the 5cyl white block engine cars and worked on probably 100+. ATF fluid change is important as is general upkeep. But the nagging little things that tend to break, oil return lines and seat back cables, are cheap and easy do it yourself fixes. For a first car I would say itts a good option. Despite common logic for a first driver I would opt for a turbo over the non-turbo version. You will ue a litle more fuel but the power is needed if you live in a city requiring lots of merging or even just a lot of highway driving. If you are willing to travel there are usually good deals on these cars on ebay.com, http://auctions.volvospeed.com/categories.php?parent=1837, or even just for forsal section there. No matter where you buy just have the car checked out. Good luck,

while the 850's had some annoying glitches they are basically solid cars [manual climate control models without turbos have held up best for my customers] when doing the timing belt job it is best to replace all components [failure here results in catastrophic engine failure] next have the trans fluid changed and flush out the converter [do this every 30k miles] while these cars have proven to be more needful than 2 or 7 series, they really are good cars i have several customers that are way over 300k miles and are still solid daily drivers and are reliable for interstate use these cars have been alot more reliable than the gimmick laden v 70 and they are much nicer to work on.. 5 grand - you will have your pick , just have your trusted mechanic check it out before you buy

VOLVO is an excellent choice. GREAT safety, they are a good looking car, and with proper maintnance they will virtually run forever. I have a 1989 240 sedan and it has a little over 7 hundred thousand miles on it right now and it still runs great. Thanks, Rob in PA.
