It is not petroleum . In the gas spectrum the main one is methane . It is strange but methane will only compress a Little. Then there is butane and propane which will compress and convert to a cold liquid. As the pressure is released more of the liquid will change back to gas .

To be precise, it boils, absorbing heat in the process of vaporizing. That's why the tank feels cold as the LPG is being used.
