hey, what your friends say, and what other people on yahoo answers say, isnt really reliable because most of them most likely don't have dreads. my boyfriend & i BOTH have dreads. ((he gave them to me))
first off. dreadlocks are NOT dirty. they're actually really clean. you can wash your hair every other day if you really want to. it's just most people choose not to. because they are usally getting dreads for natural reasons.
second. you don't rub crap into your hair to form dreadlocks. my boyfriend & i both used beeswax and a residue free shampoo. also, backcombing will speed up the dread forming process.
third. it's highly unlikely that you will get lice if you have dreadlocks. people with cleaner hair are actually more apt to it. if you don't believe me, go look it up online. or talk to a salon stylist, because lice and bugs & stuff, actually don't like dreads, because they can't move around in them. lice like cleaner hair. and no, bob marley did not have like 30 different kinds of lice in his hair when he died. he's my hero. i think i'd know.
if you wanna learn more about dread formation, or other myths. or even how to take care of your dreads. you can email my boyfriend & i at : flea433@yahoo.com and we'd be happy to talk to you.

I don't think dreads are bad at all. I am from Jamaica and I see people with dreads all the time, most dreads are different because some people style there dreads while others let it grow wild because they don't take the time to maintain it. It will be dirty if u don't wash it and maintain it, I was thinking about getting dreads my self but I am the type of person that will not keep it up since I really don't like combing my hair to begin with so I just left it to the people who wears it best. But if you think you can wear the dreads without letting the dreads wear you go a head and make a change.

there is a way for dreads,
section the hair, the section you make will make your dread,
matt the hair into place, and matt the crap out of em,
flat iron em, so the matt stays,
then use a perm solution and neutralizer to lock the matt into place,
it takes 1-2 times of perming to really lock it,
but after you can wash it more then when people just dont wash thier hair or use product to matt the hair.
Dreads are awesome !
Hope this helps

My friends boyfriend has them and they smell, he bathes but for some reason his hair just doesn't smell clean, not to mention how ridiculous he looks. It's not a good look for a white boy.
