A biblical generation is 70 years. The generation spoken of in Matthew is the generation of Israel becoming a nation again, which happened in 1948. That gives us until 2018 for the tribulation to start.

Mat 24:34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.
It means in this verse that our generations today will not end untill the time of the end of the world, but nobody knows the day or time when will it be and this is in verses 36 to 44 which I quote:
.Mat 24:36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
Mat 24:37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
Mat 24:38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
Mat 24:39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
Mat 24:40 Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
Mat 24:41 Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
Mat 24:42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.
Mat 24:43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.
Mat 24:44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.
Upon the coming of Jesus this will happen:
Mat 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:
Mat 24:30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
Mat 24:31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
The generation for God is not the same generations for man.

As people say, a generation is generally thought of as 40 years. There is a lot of debate concerning this particular passage, however. One interpretation revolves around the term 'generation.' Apparently, sometimes genea ("generation'') was used as a synonym of genos ("race,'' "stock,'' "nation,'' "people''). Although this meaning for genea was not common, it is found as early as Homer and Herodotus and as late as Plutarch. Thus, Jesus' words might be rendered, "This people shall not pass away until all these things are fulfilled.'' In that rendering, He could have been referring to the Jewish people (which is the most likely given the context) or to the Church - for both Israel and the Church are given divine promises that they would remain in existence until the end of time (Jer. 31:35-37; Matt. 16:18).

I think Mosses said it best in Psalms 90:10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten. [if you are not up on ancient English 70 years]
and if by reason of strength they are fourscore years [80]
yet is their strength, labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. [ that was used as a symbol for going away in those days. Like children grow up and fly away, they don't actually fly away but they are gone.] Ancient Hebrew texts from which this came says gone.
Glad you referred to Matthew 24:7 as the starting point many people don't realize the sugnifigance of World War !.
But we do see many people living into their 90's and 100's today. But it does show we are deep into the time of the end.
From 1914 when all nations fought as described.
To 2014 would be 100 years how many would live longer than that?

A generation is long enough for a whole land to fall into sin or a whole land to be saved. In many mighty moves of God, God used one man in his generation to bring change.
I'd have to go with 70 as that's the only one to fit that prophecy. but 40 seems real enough.
We call our children the next generation and I don't see many women having babies past 40.
There's a lot of good answers here. But make sure you make an impact in your generation!

There is none. It refers not to a Period of time but to the Generation of People (Collective) in that time, that will witness the events that occur. And that Generation will not pass away (die) until the events are fulfilled.

the given time is 40 years, and that is why, many Christians believed that the lord would return in 1988, but my wife and I are from that generation, and we have not passed away yet.
